Mbappé Wants to Leave PSG… Because of Benzema

Karim Benzema’s Departure Impacts Kylian Mbappé’s Decision to Leave PSG.

Karim Benzema’s unexpected departure to Saudi Arabia may have had a significant impact on Kylian Mbappé’s decision to not extend his contract with PSG. In early June, the Real Madrid striker surprised the football world by leaving Europe for Saudi Arabia. Shortly after, PSG received Mbappé’s letter indicating his changed stance on contract extension.

According to Marca, at PSG, “one of the reasons for Kylian’s change in strategy as reflected in the letter is the departure of Karim Benzema to Saudi Arabia.” Despite Benzema’s planned departure in 2024, discussions between Mbappé’s representatives and the club regarding an extension were progressing well, including meetings and proposals for further investments in Qatar. However, everything suddenly changed.

Negotiations for the extension were going smoothly, with the scenario considered beneficial for all parties involved. PSG would recoup part of the significant investment made to keep their star player through a transfer in June 2024. Mbappé would fulfill his dream of participating in the Olympics with the French national team, one of his major goals, and fill the void left by Benzema’s departure.

Marca explains that Mbappé’s letter marked a “radical U-turn that was not expected by PSG, who responded firmly.” However, the possibility of an extension is still on the table, but PSG is demanding a decision by July 31st. The club believes that Mbappé’s new strategy is hindering the club’s project, and they need a quality striker if he does not intend to continue.

Nevertheless, PSG is resolute in its position: “The party is over. PSG is above everyone, including the president and any player. If Kylian really wants to leave now, then let him leave,” as suggested at Parc des Princes.
