Matvey Safonov joins PSG this summer: the Russian goalkeeper is not here to sit on the bench.

Matvey Safonov has big ambitions with PSG. The Russian goalkeeper signed until 2029, and he’s not aiming to be the second choice behind Donnarumma. “Being PSG’s number 2 goalkeeper? I don’t understand that. No one ever told me I was number two. I come to Paris to fight. I want to play football. Even if they had told me I was number two, I wouldn’t have listened. It’s up to me to give my best. I don’t see myself as a number two. I don’t want to be a backup player,” he said in comments to a Russian media outlet, translated by Paris Team.

“If they make me number two, it won’t be easy for the number one… I will fight with him constantly. I’ve never lost a competition. I’ve always been the number one goalkeeper. At Krasnodar, I was always number one.”

“In the national team, I was a substitute for the first match, then I became the number one goalkeeper. I’ve always been number one until now. I can’t be a substitute. These are all prejudices. It doesn’t depend on where you come from… I understand. I’m Russian, and nobody knows me here in France. Maybe they haven’t planned to make me number one right away. But I believe in it.” Donnarumma has been warned…
