Returning to the French national team, Kylian Mbappé addressed his absence last November and his thoughts on the post-Deschamps era in an interview with TF1.
The Real Madrid striker clarified that his decision to step away in November was made in agreement with Didier Deschamps, prioritizing the team’s well-being.
“We discussed it, and I was always in contact with the coach. We made this decision internally, thinking it was the best for everyone, especially for the national team. The France team comes before any individual, including me. There’s nothing more important than the blue jersey.”
Zidane in 2026? Mbappé Stays Neutral
With Deschamps set to leave after the 2026 World Cup, Zidane is widely considered his likely successor. But Mbappé carefully avoided fueling speculation, keeping his answer diplomatic.
“Everyone knows the name that keeps coming up, but I always say: it’s not my place to discuss it. That’s up to President Philippe Diallo.”
That said, Mbappé acknowledged Zidane’s legendary status while remaining respectful of Deschamps.
“Zidane my idol? Yes, he was the idol of many French kids. He made history with the national team and will always be in the hearts of the French people. But talking about him as a coach? That’s not my decision. I try to avoid discussing it because we already have a coach, and respect is important.”
Mbappé Would Welcome Zidane… If It Happens
Despite his neutral stance, Mbappé subtly hinted at his enthusiasm for a Zidane-led France team.
“If Zidane becomes the coach, I would be extremely happy. But again, it’s not my decision.”
With two years left under Deschamps, the future of Les Bleus remains uncertain, but Mbappé’s admiration for Zidane is undeniable.
