In a surprising turn of events, Lionel Messi, despite being awarded the Ballon d’Or for 2023, did not secure the title of Newcomer of the Year in the Major League Soccer (MLS).
The MLS doesn’t seem to be completely starstruck by Lionel Messi. Messi’s impressive stats of 11 goals and 5 assists in 14 matches were not enough to earn him the title of Newcomer of the Year in the MLS.
Instead, the honor went to Giorgos Giakoumakis, a 28-year-old Greek forward who played for Atlanta United. Giakoumakis, formerly of Celtic Glasgow, scored an impressive 17 goals in 27 matches during his debut season in the MLS.
